Two dies in auto crash of abia governor's wife

Umuahia – Tragedy struck on Tuesday in Abia, when two women died in an auto crash involving the motorcade bearing the wife of Abia Governor, Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu.

Nkechi Ikpeazu

One of the dead women was identified as Mrs Promise Uche-Nwamkpa, wife of a former member of the Abia state House of Assembly. The second woman was Mrs Nwamaka Maduchukwu, a senior special assistant on media to Mrs. Ikpeazu.
The accident occurred when the motorcade was returning to Umuahia from Ntigha-Uzor in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia, where Ikpeazu had attended a burial.
Witnesses said that the Hummer carrying the deceased somersaulted thrice, when the driver attempted to overtake a vehicle at Ndiolumbe around 5 p.m.
A female occupant of the vehicle, who escaped unhurt, told NAN that the driver was on high speed when the accident occurred.
“The driver was on high speed and everybody in the vehicle was asking him to slow down. Suddenly the bus started jumping up and down before it started somersaulting,” she said.
She said that the vehicle somersaulted about three times and that she only found herself seated safely on a field by the road.
The middle-aged, fair-complexioned woman, who was wearing a dress designed for the burial, was full of praises to God, saying that “I escaped death by His grace.”
The driver of the Hummer, Mr Bright Ugwubujor, blamed the accident on brake failure.
Narrating the incident to NAN at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, Ugwubujor said that the accident occurred when he attempted to overtake a vehicle ahead of him.
“When I tried to overtake the vehicle, I noticed an oncoming vehicle and attempted to retreat but I encountered a bump on the road and when I tried to apply the brake it could not work.
“Immediately, the vehicle began to somersault,” he said.
A medical doctor at the unit, where all the victims were brought for medical attention, confirmed to NAN the death of the two women.
He said that other occupants of the bus, including the driver sustained bruises and minor injuries.
He further said Mrs Promise Uche-Nwamkpa, was brought in dead to the hospital.
The second woman, Mrs Nwamaka Maduchukwu, gave up while doctors were battling to resuscitate her with the aid of an oxygen, he said
Maduchukwu was a widow and mother of four children.
She was also the chairperson, State Information Chapel of the Abia Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
The Chairman of NUJ in the state, Mr John Emejor, who was at the hospital to sympathise with the victims, has expressed shock over the incident.
Also, the former lawmaker, Uche-Nwamkpa, who came to the hospital to identify the body of his wife, wept uncontrollably.
Her body was thereafter taken to the hospital morgue.
Meanwhile, members of Maduchukwu’s church and colleagues resorted to frantic prayers to revive her.
An aide to the governor’s wife, Mr Chika Ojiegbe, said the Office of the Wife of the Governor “will issue a release soon.” (NAN)

Ex governor fayemi join ekiti race.

former governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has formally declared for the July 14 governorship race in the state.
The current Minister of Mines and Steel Development said he was persuaded to join the race because of poverty, frustrations and misery of Ekiti people.
He made his ambition known at a news conference after hosting leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress from all the 16 Local Government Areas and the 177 wards of the state at his Isan-Ekiti country home in the Oye Local Government Area of the state.
He became the 35th aspirant to formally indicate interest in the governorship poll on the platform of the APC.
Fayemi promised to dislodge the Governor Ayodele Fayose-led Peoples Democratic Party based on his track record and “improved welfare” he provided for workers, retirees and pensioners while in office in the state.
He warned Fayose not to attempt to remove or destroy his campaign posters and billboards the way his government was doing to some opposition posters, saying doing so would be resisted by all means possible.
The ex-governor said he would formally submit his letter of intent to the state secretariat of the APC after the Independent National Electoral Commission lifted the ban on campaigns on April 15.
He said, “I am not going to jump the gun because there are rules and guidelines for electioneering.  The body responsible for that has stated the obvious — when you can actually start the campaigns. The fact that people are flouting the guidelines is the fault of INEC.
“I have also been very clear that whatever it takes, constitutionally, legally and legitimately to put our party in office in October 2018, we will do as a party.”
Fayemi described other aspirants from the APC as equally good and qualified, but advised against divisive tendencies from their followers.
The ex-governor stressed that whoever that eventually emerged from the coming primary must be embraced by all since the national secretariat of the party had promised an open, free and fair exercise.
He promised to use his second-term to correct all the past mistakes and improve on the good ones, saying he had learnt his lessons since leaving office about four years ago as governor as well as garnered new experience.

Sheriff handover documents to efcc for self release. 12billion aircraft.

After being interrogated for two days on how he acquired a N12 billion jet, former Borno State Governor, Alhaji Modu Sheriff, on Tuesday submitted some vital documents to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, apparently to prove he did not dip his hands into any public till in securing the status symbol.
A top EFCC official confirmed to Vanguard that Sheriff handed in the documents to the commission before noon on Tuesday and was allowed to go home on self recognition since he was still being investigated on how he came about the expensive jet.
“So far, we cannot disclose why we invited the governor but he certainly has some issues to explain to us, as the investigation has just started,” a source in EFCC said last night.
It will be recalled that the agency had on Monday grilled the former Peoples Democratic Party Chairman for hours before allowing him to go home.

Although the commission did not disclose why it summoned him to its office in Abuja, Vanguard gathered that the former governor was questioned on how he acquired his N12 billion executive jet, a Gulfstream 650 after leaving office as a public officer.
Vanguard learnt that the invitation of Sheriff by the EFCC, was to find out if he abused his office as a governor or benefitted from alleged rip-off of a former president to the tune of $200 million under the guise of enforcing a dubious Boko Haram ceasefire in a neighbouring country in 2014.
The operatives also wanted to establish if the said amount was transmitted by a top presidential aide to a foreign leader which has strong personal relationship with Sheriff.
The operatives, who invited the former governor to their head office in Abuja, questioned him specifically on where he got the money to acquire the ostentatious aircraft in the same year that the controversial Boko Haram ceasefire flops.

SAYS ATTACK ON MINISTRY OVER CO
THE Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi has revealed that the House of Representatives duly appropriated the sum of N2,096,500.00 for the concession of the Ajaokuta Steel Complex in the 2017 budget, wondering why the same House has now turned around to attack the ministry for implementing the law.
Dr Fayemi who disclosed this in Abuja said both the ministry and the National Assembly had been on the same page regarding the need to concession the Steel Complex, adding that the ministry had been canvassing the concession option in all its meetings and sectoral debates with the lawmakers.
He said the government had taken a decision not to spend an additional one dollar on Ajaokuta since over $8 billion dollars had been sunk into the project by successive administrations since 1982.
The minister said government decided to give the complex to a credible operator with proven technical capacity and financial wherewithal to run it more profitably, saying this necessitated the appropriation of over N2 billion dollars for the concession in the 2017 appropriation duly passed into law by the same lawmakers now opposed to the concession.
According to him, “we are just implementing what was passed by the National Assembly that is why we are surprised that we have been subjected to an unwarranted attack over the matter in the last one week.”
Dr Fayemi said the March 1, 2018 sectoral debate which himself and the Minister of State, Honourable Abubakar Bawa Bwari, could not attend, and for which they duly notified the lawmakers, was the first and only time they would be absent at such debates, having attended four previously, with focus on Ajaokuta and the steel sector.
The Minister stated that most of the allegations made against him, the Minister of State and the Ministry officials were not only unfounded but malicious.
